Do you have a quote or scripture that guides your life? One that hits your very center?
The scriptures are full of wise and helpful verses that bring meaning to our lives. Of all the many verses in the scriptures, my favorite is found in Proverbs. It is short and succinct, like many other verses in Proverbs, but it hits me to the very center. The scripture reads as follows:
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths
I love that scripture because it helps keep me going in the right direction. If we truly trust in God, we will do all that we can to follow what He says. We are promised that if we put our trust in God with all our heart and recognize Him in all things, He will direct our lives. He will make sure that things work out as they should.
Let me share a quick experience that illustrates this point. In college, I studied Mechanical Engineering. At the beginning of my senior year, I realized that I love programming and didn’t love a lot of the theory in my engineering courses. I wondered if I should switch to Computer Science, but I only had one more year to go and felt I should finish it out. Part of me wondered why God would have let me get that far and then realize I didn’t love it. But, I trusted in Him, with help from my wonderful wife, that everything would work out, that God would “direct my paths.” A couple years later, I see how God has led me to where I am today. At General Motors, I program applications that are used for engineers and I love it. It is perfect that I have an engineering background because it helps me create better applications. And I get to do programming! I see that God had led me and guided my paths and I’m so grateful for that!
Life is full of change and challenges which can be very difficult, much more difficult than my experience above. It could be that you have to make a decision to follow God that could bring about undesirable consequences at work, among your friends or even in your family. However, trusting in God by doing what He wants you to do will always work out better. He won’t let you down and I know that is true.
Ultimately, we can and should look to our Savior Jesus Christ. He always trusted in God even to the sacrificing of His life to follow God’s will. Let us be like Him and trust in the Lord!
That is my favorite scripture. What about you? What scripture do you love?
